All About Terpenes: A Concise Introduction to the World of Terps

What are Terpenes?

In layman’s terms, terpenes can be seen as the essential oils of a plant. They are naturally-occurring aromatic chemical compounds in plants and animals that are produced to either attract or deter potential pollinators or predators, respectively. There are an estimated 400 types of terpenes and terpenoids found in cannabis, all of them with different applications. In cannabis, they are what give different strains their distinctive aromas and flavors. Current research shows terpenes also work in a unique conjunction with the different cannabinoids found in cannabis, which is why two different strains with similar cannabinoid levels can have much different effects.


Why Care About Terps?

Terpenes give life its character through aroma, flavor and mood-enhancing effects by interacting with our different regulatory systems. Different terpenes can have different gentle effects on these systems. For example, Beta-Caryophyllene has anti-inflammatory properties, Lavandin has a sedative effect and Eucalyptol is very uplifting. The 400+ terpenes found in cannabis all have different properties and purposes. Whether you desire energy, anti-anxiety, anti-fungal or other results, terpenes are a great tool. For help with stress, strains higher in linalool, myrcene and/or eucalyptol could prove to be beneficial. If antidepressant properties are your goal, try limonene, beta-caryophyllene and/or alpha-pinene. If you’re looking for a more energizing effect, try humulene, terpinolene and/or valencene. No matter what you’re feeling, terpenes are the key to achieving your desired state of mind.
